Edith “Eydie” Golden Capps, 76, lovingly known as MamaEydie, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, December 27, 2025, surrounded by the family she devoted her life to loving and caring for. Eydie’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease ended as it began—with grace, strength, and the comfort of those who cherished her most.
Eydie was born on January 1, 1949, in Post, Texas, to Thomas and Golden Johnson. She grew up in a small home in Post with her six brothers. As a child, Eydie found joy in the simple things—playing in nearby fields and parks, exploring along the railroad tracks, and spending long days outdoors. Those early years shaped her adventurous spirit and lifelong love of sports and activity.
A gifted athlete, Eydie excelled in basketball and volleyball during her high school years, even earning a college basketball scholarship. Her talent, determination, and warm spirit earned her recognition as Class Favorite and Most Athletic, and she was also honored as FFA Sweetheart and Choir Sweetheart—a true reflection of her kindness, grace, and the way she made everyone feel seen and valued. Her love of sports stayed with her throughout her life and later became something she joyfully shared with her grandchildren, always ready to play a game, shoot hoops, or cheer them on.
Eydie was a devout follower of Christ, and her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She especially enjoyed listening to K-LOVE, finding comfort and joy in the music and messages that spoke to her heart.
Eydie spent most of her working life with the Agriculture and Soil Conservation Services (ASCS) Department in Post, Texas, where she proudly served farmers and ranchers in the Post and Tahoka communities.
Above all else, Eydie’s greatest joy was her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them—especially time at the park in Post. To them, she was not just a grandmother, but MamaEydie, always active, playful, and full of love.
Eydie is survived by her daughter, Golden (Scott) Nettles of Lubbock; her son, Brook (Lisa) Capps of Austin; her grandchildren, Trent Nettles, Allie (Nolan) Ragan, Ella Capps, and Cole McCrary; and her brother, Irvin Lee Johnson of Kyle, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Golden Johnson, and her brothers, Thomas, Lathon, Norman, Clifford, and Dan Johnson.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Promiseland Assisted Living, Bridge Hospice, and the compassionate caregivers who lovingly cared for Eydie during her final years. Their kindness and dedication will never be forgotten.
A celebration of Eydie’s beautiful life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2025, at Lake Ridge Memorial Chapel in Lubbock, Texas, with graveside services to follow at Terrace Cemetery in Post, Texas. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2025, at Lake Ridge Memorial Chapel.
