Edwin Preston Hatchett “Chief” went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, November 13th. He was born August 9, 1926 in Lubbock to the late Lester P. and Fannie Hatchett. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1943 and attended one semester at Texas Tech. Ed then served in the U.S. Army Medical corps in Hawaii with the 93rd Infantry, Battalion, Co. B. After returning home he met the love of his life, Eva Vivian Wright. They married, May 11, 1947. They had four children.
He was employed by the Lubbock Fire Department for 31 years from 1951 until 1982. He worked his way up the ladder and retired as the District Chief in the Training Division. He was very proud of his service with the firefighters, Local 972. He painted houses and hung wall paper when he wasn’t at the fire station.
He was an active charter member of Highland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the adult choir, served on numerous committees and taught second grade Sunday School.
All his life he was an avid reader. He was always listening to music He liked all kinds of music including country/western, southern gospel and piano. He loved to talk to anyone anytime. He liked to tinker and was always repairing something or trying. He prided himself as never having a mortgage on a house. If he couldn’t pay for something he wouldn’t buy it. He was a very caring and loving husband, father, grandfather “Pepa”, great- grandfather and friend. He had a servant’s heart and was a caregiver to many.
Preceded in death was his wife, his parents, two sisters, three brothers and one daughter, Leslie Kain. He is survived by his children: Caryn (Mike) Coppedge of Albuquerque, Dianne (Larry) Ward of Plainview, and Mike (Sheryl) Hatchett of Dallas. Grandchildren: Sheila (Tom) Boggess, Tom (Kathryn) Coppedge, Robert (Amanda) Coppedge, Julie (Chris) Groves; John (Blaire) Ward, Edwin Ward; Jennifer (Bennett) Kimbell, Sam (Elizabeth) Hatchett and Rebecca Hatchett (Jason) Thomale. Great grandchildren: Avery, Christian, Jaden, Levi, Karys, Ethan, Clay, Jacob, Andrew, Dameon, Cecilia and Newton. Brothers: Carlton, Bill (Twila) Hatchett of Lubbock, Jim (Sherry) Hatchett of Levelland, Sisters: Helen Gainer of Kermit, Pauline Mann of Lubbock, numerous nieces, nephews and many great friends especially John and Susie Kain and Beverly Hatchett.
