Esther B. Mayfield, 85, of Lubbock, Texas, left this earthly life to join her soulmate, Larry Mayfield, on Thursday June 18, 2026, as he had passed merely 10 hours earlier. Larry was waiting to welcome her at Heaven's gates.
Their love story was one of true partnership, unwavering commitment, and deep affection, a bond so strong that they could not bear to be apart for long. Together again, they leave behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire all who knew them.
Esther was born October 5, 1940, to Jose and Maria Buentello, in Del Rio, Texas. Esther dedicated more than 30 years of her life to waitressing, a career that brought her great joy and fulfillment. She spent many years serving customers at La Paloma, La Cumbre Restaurant in Cactus Alley, Luby's, and Manna Bread and Wine. Known for her friendly spirit, Esther loved meeting new people and had a special gift for turning customers into friends. The relationships she built with coworkers and patrons over the years became some of her most treasured memories. She retired in 1998, grateful for the many friendships and experiences her career had given her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Mayfield; parents, Jose and Maria Buentello; brothers, Baldamar and Jose Buentello; and son, Ronnie Vecchio.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Alicia Lugo; brother, David Buentello; daughter, Robin (Brian) McNeill; and her son, David (Catherine) Mayfield; and grandchildren, Seth (Rachel) McNeill, Kassidy Mayfield, Mark McNeill, David Jr., and Mason Mayfield.
Our family is forever grateful to Hospice of Lubbock, CareCo, Calvert Home Health, Carol Meschwitz, and Corina Rasura. Their compassionate care, unwavering support, and genuine kindness helped carry us through one of life's most difficult journeys. From tending to physical needs to offering emotional comfort and guidance, they cared for our loved ones and our family with extraordinary empathy and grace. We will always remember their generosity of spirit and the comfort they brought during a time when it was needed most.
