Glenda was born on March 2, 1948, to A. H. and Ellen Howell. Her earliest years were spent on the family’s farm in Ropesville, Texas before moving to Lubbock at age six. She attended Lubbock Public Schools until 1965, when her family relocated to Sunizona, Arizona, where she graduated from Valley Union in 1966.
Glenda pursued education throughout her life. She attended Grand Canyon State College for two years and later studied at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Later, she resumed her college education in 1990 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from West Texas A&M University in 1993.
Glenda’s life was anchored by her Christian faith. On June 6, 1957, during Vacation Bible School at College Avenue Baptist Church, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was later baptized. She served as a church pianist in Arizona during her late teens and remained active in various congregations over the years.
In her later years, her faith sustained her through health struggles, during which she confidently proclaimed Christ's healing power.
Glenda was a gifted artist. Inspired by two artistic aunts, she poured her passion into her canvases, culminating in her fine arts degree.
Music was a joyful centerpiece of her life, especially during family reunions, where she loved participating in the "round-robin" of family pianists playing gospel music with other family instramentalists. Beyond her arts, Glenda was enjoyed bowling, and participated in Lubbock tournament competitions, taught family members the game, and even met her husband of five years through the sport.
Glenda possessed a strong work ethic and a versatile background. Before marrying in 1979, she worked as a key-punch operator for major Lubbock employers, including Methodist Hospital, Time DC Motor Freight, Whites Home and Auto, and Coca-Cola.
She was skilled in retail sales and was recognized by her employers for outstanding sales performance at Dillard’s Department Store and United Supermarkets' Market Street. She also served as an Activities Director at a local nursing home and as a private caregiver and companion to elderly clients.
Glenda loved her country, her home state of Texas, and her family. She left them many memories.
She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings: Lonnie Joe Howell (Cheryl) of Levelland, TX; Janet Bates (Charles) of Lubbock, TX; and Geneva Carol Gotsch (James) of Lusby, MD. She also leaves behind her nephews and other extended family.
There is great appreciation of her medical team at UMC, Lakeridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, Raider Ranch and Nurse Practitioner Cheryl Howell.
The family requests that any memorials be made to Beyond Faith Hospice of Lubbock.
