

Glenn Edward Lewis of Lubbock and a longtime resident of Seagraves, Texas, died Thursday, February 20, at the age of 86. Born on May 29, 1927 to E.P. and Mae Lewis in Memphis, TX, Glenn was the oldest of three sons and was raised in Quitaque, TX.
He graduated from Texas Tech University (then Texas Technological College) in 1949 where he served as both Student Council President in 1947 and 1948 and Captain of the Red Raider football team in 1947and 1948.
A tough competitor, Glenn played the position of Halfback for the Red Raiders in
1944, 1946, 1947 and 1948 under longtime Tech Coach Dell Morgan. Glenn helped lead the team to Border Conference Championships in 1947 and 1948. He also held a number of longstanding Texas Tech football records including the longest rush of 88 yards against Texas Western in 1948.
Glenn’s athletic career also included playing football at the Naval Training Center in San Diego when he served in the U.S. Navy in 1945.
In 1949, Glenn was drafted in the 5th round of the National Football League’s draft by the Green Bay Packers, selected as the 43rd player in the draft. Playing halfback at Green Bay, he was coached by Curly Lambeau, of the famous Lambeau Field.
His love of football and sports remained a passion throughout his life as he later coached across the Panhandle including both football and basketball in Lamesa, Texas for several years helping lead his teams to many winning victories. After hanging up his coaching whistle, Glenn continued his love of the game mentoring players and observing from the sidelines most Friday nights in Lamesa and later in Seagraves.
A longtime resident of Seagraves, Glenn owned and operated Lewis Irrigation and served as the Mayor of Seagraves for a number of years. He also wrote a weekly football column for the Gaines County News. Like his father, he was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Trudi Lewis Boyd and her
husband, Fran Boyd and granddaughters Katherine and Madison Boyd all of
Alexandria, VA; younger brothers Don “Skeeter” Lewis and his wife Mary Lewis of Lubbock, TX and Byron and his wife Judy Lewis of Houston, TX; and many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and loved ones.
Glenn was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Edward Lewis in 1969; former wife Clella Mae Hill Lewis in 2008; and his parents E.P. Lewis in 1987 and Mae Lewis in 1988.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock.The family will receive friends for a visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home immediately following the internment.
