Guy Hugh Goen of Lubbock died peacefully on New Year’s Day, 2017, at age of 76. Guy was born in Spur, Texas, to Guy and Verna Beechly Goen. After his graduation from Spur High School in1959, he received his Associated Degree from Lubbock Christian College and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from Abilene Christian College.
He was employed by the University of Texas Land System during the 70’s and married Gaile Hutton during the time. In 1978, they moved to Seminole, Texas and eventually Dickens, Texas, to work on the Goen Ranches. In 1984, Guy realized one of his lifelong dreams when he opened the Circle G Barbecue Restaurant in Dickens, utilizing many of the recipes and skills he had learned from his dad who was renowned for his chuck wagon cooking. In 1955, Guy moved to Lubbock and opened a restaurant, Goen Barbecue; and in the early 2000’s, he began working for the City of Lubbock, remaining there until his retirement in 2016.
Guy had many varied interests during his lifetime, interests who usually involved helping and serving others. He served as a Boy Scout Leader, was a member of the Dickens Volunteer Fire Department and a trained first responder; he served on the School Commissioner while living in Dickens. He was a member of Green Lawn Church of Christ in Lubbock.
Guy is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, John, and wife Jackie of Seminole, Texas; nieces, Julie Panger, and husband Josh of Lubbock, and Johnna Shain, and husband Mitch of Seminole; one great niece, and aunt and uncle, numerous cousins, and dear and cherished friends, Leslie and Ashley, Steve and Diane Taylor, and Gregg and Lorrie. Diane announced Guy’s death on social media by posting, “God called home one of His angels today to his prepared place. Guy had so many people that loved him and that he loved. I love you, Guy, and thank God He gave us such an example of how we should love the Lord and follow His word.”
