He was born September 8, 1936 in Davidson, OK to William Nute and Eulema Shine Barnett. He moved as an infant to New Home, TX where he attended school and graduated as Valedictorian of his class. He then attended Tarleton State and Texas Tech College in the ROTC program receiving his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Jim was commissioned and joined the US Army in February of 1960. He served 2 tours in Vietnam and retired as a Major after 21 years of service in 1981. James then taught school in New Home and Lubbock Cooper for 6 years before retiring to enjoy and help raise his grandsons.
Jim married Dorothy Tkacs June 15, 1963. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Lubbock; daughter, Susan Barker of Mississippi; son William Barnett of Lubbock; 3 grandsons, Evan Harris, Matthew Harris and Bryson Barnett.
