

He was born on January 5, 1924, in Henryetta, Oklahoma to James Waldo Smyth and Mary Emmaline (Self) Smyth.
He was raised in Borger, Texas and after graduating high school in 1941, enlisted in the US. Army Air Force in 1942. He was a left waist gunner on a B-24, and qualified as a Sharpshooter Carbine. He was awarded three medals; American Theatre Campaign, Good Conduct, and the World War II Victory medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married his wife, Pauline Simpson on December 25, 1947 in McLean, Texas. Following his military service, he earned his bachelor's degree with a major in Marketing and a minor in Economics from Oklahoma (A&M) State University in 1950. He was employed for 33 years at G.M.A.C. beginning in 1951 and retired in 1984. He held job titles as dealer’s relations manager, credit manager, and finance manager.
The job he cherished most was being a loving husband, and grandfather. His favorite activities included building and flying model airplanes, attending any and all of his grandchildren’s events, and helping at his son’s business, Total Engine Service. In later years, he enjoyed meeting his group of friends for coffee every morning at Whataburger.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Pauline. He is survived by his children; son,
Casey Smyth and wife, Lisa, daughter, Karen Mann and husband Darrell, all of Lubbock;
grandchildren, Corey Smyth and wife Emily, Courtney (Smyth) Gilles, and husband Mitchell,
Julia (Mann) Condez, and husband Christian; and twin great grandchildren; Clementine Smyth
and Calloway Smyth.
Visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30pm on Friday, December 10, 2021 at Resthaven Funeral
Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1pm on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Resthaven’s
Mausoleum Chapel.
