James was born to Wilson and Nell Stewart. He graduated from Lubbock High School with the Class of 1959 and later attended Texas Tech University. Following his education, James began a career in law enforcement, serving for ten years before embarking on a distinguished 49½-year career in agricultural broadcasting. As an Agricultural Director, he became a respected voice in the farming community and a passionate advocate for agriculture. He took great pride in supporting farmers and ranchers throughout his career.
On May 2, 1975, James married Doris, the love of his life. Together they built a family and shared many years of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
James was a proud member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters and was deeply committed to serving others. He volunteered with the Texas Girls & Boys Ranch, a cause that remained close to his heart throughout his life. In recent years, he especially enjoyed spending Saturday evenings with Becky Justice-Ford and the many friends gathered at the Coyote Store. His generosity, warm spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need earned him the admiration and affection of all who knew him.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Nell Stewart, and his daughter, Heidi Fensterbush.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Stewart; his sisters, Margaret Long and Kay Gunter; his children, Robin Reeves and husband Steve Reeves, Blair Stewart and wife Lisa Stewart, and Guy Stewart and wife Rachelle Stewart. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Cody Leake, Coy Leake, Brittany Kirkpatrick, Conner Stewart, Brooklyn Stewart, Tiffany Young, Heather Caro, and Brooke Linnenkugel; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Cashton, Bella, Tylen, Pariz, Kacelyn, Myles, Norah, Nellie, Kolby, Kaden, Sydnei, London, Ireland, Kennedy, Katie, and Georgia.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Texas Girls & Boys Ranch. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Hospice of the South Plains and to the many friends and family members whose support and kindness meant so much during this time.
