Jay Bruce Edgett was born on January 27, 1949 and went on to his eternal Home on April 26, 2026 at the age of 77. He was born to Allan and Dolores Edgett in Olean, NY. He spent his childhood on their farm with his older sister, Felecia (Hernandez) and near other extended family. His family moved to Deming, NM as a teenager, where he graduated from high school and then he attended New Mexico State University. He earned both his undergraduate and master’s degree from the university and went on to teach, coach and officiate sports in New Mexico for over 45 years.
He met his wife, Michelle and they quickly married July 4, 1978. They had over 47 years of a loving, committed marriage and built a beautiful family together. They moved to Roswell after they married and raised their family there. Their children are: Daniel Edgett (wife, Kacey; grandchildren Keely and Justin Paige; great grandson Jackson Paige; Keegan and Kiara Edgett), Heather Summers (husband, Kevin; grandchildren Addison and Ezra Summers), PJ Edgett (wife Hollie; grandchildren Wyatt and Sophie Edgett), Jenny Knight (granddaughter Annabelle Knight), Jamie Huizenga (husband, Jonathon; grandsons Justin and Jackson Huizenga), and Kelly Small (husband JD; grandchildren Andyn, Callan, Lexi and Braxton Small).
Jay truly spent his life in service of others. He taught and coached a countless number of students. He was a devoted husband and father, caring about the needs of his family far beyond his own. His relationship with God was of top priority, daily leading his family in prayer. He served the last 7 years as a deacon at his church, getting to baptize dozens of individuals.
Jay lit up every room he entered with his booming presence and joy. He was an avid sports fan: playing, coaching, officiating, or watching them. Upon moving to Lubbock, TX in 2018 to be closer to grandchildren, he and Michelle became big Red Raiders fans and slowly became season ticket holders in nearly every sport offered. They also enjoyed going to concerts and movies, as well as traveling, with a particular fondness for cruises. He spent his retirement caring for grandkids and enjoying time with Michelle.
Though devastated by his sudden passing, his family rejoices in his Heavenly Homecoming to a Savior that Jay loved with all his heart. A Celebration of Life will be held in Lubbock, TX at the Trinity Church Chapel on Friday, May 1 at 4pm.
