

Jerry Freeman Grimes, 95, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026. Jerry was born August 27, 1930 to Ray Freeman and Kate Driggers in Trent, Texas. Jerry married her college sweetheart Roy T. Grimes on June 12, 1954 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lubbock.
Jerry was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend whose life was defined by her love of family, faith, and service to others. She was a proud Texas Tech graduate and remained deeply connected to the university and the Lubbock community throughout her life.
After graduating, she was a secretary in the President’s office at Texas Tech University for Drs. D. M. Wiggins and E. N. Jones. Jerry dedicated countless years to serving her community. She was a past president of the Lubbock Women’s Club and the founding president of the Lubbock Women’s Club Historical Foundation. She was also a past president of the Sherick Memorial Home Advisory Board and the Women’s Division of The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. She served in leadership and volunteer roles with Christ the King Cathedral, Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Texas Conference of Churches, and many other organizations. In 1998, she received the City of Lubbock Committee for Women’s Extra Mile Award in recognition of her service.
She had a lifelong love of travel domestically and abroad, enjoyed spending time relaxing with the family at their summer home in New Mexico, playing bridge, and volunteering. But above all, Jerry loved her family. She was a devoted mother and a cherished grandmother who took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Her warmth, generosity, faith, and ability to make those around her feel loved will be remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by her brother, Jimmy Freeman (wife Patsy), her daughters, Cathy (Don Moore), Cindy (Ron Mattson), Susan (Tem Mitchell), her grandchildren, Brandi and Rusty DeWaters (wife Katie), Seth Mattson (wife Evi) and Marlee Tavenner (husband Austin), Conor and Ryen Moore, her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth DeWaters, a second great-grandchild, baby Tavenner, due in September, and a special nephew David Gilbert and his wife Marilyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy T., her son, Tommy, and her sister, Novie Gilbert.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 20th at 10am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Texas Tech Alumni Association, the Texas Tech College of Education Roy T. Grimes Scholarship in c/o of COE, Box 41071 Lubbock, 79409, Carillon Foundation, or Holy Spirit Catholic Church, organizations close to Jerry’s heart.
Jerry leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, service, and family. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
