Jimmie Boyce Hancock, beloved mother, died peacefully on June 7, 2015 after a short illness. She was 100 years old. Boyce was born in Wheeler County, TX on March 25, 1915 to Barney and Minnie Young. When Barney died in the 1920 flu epidemic, Minnie moved her family to Chillicothe, TX. In Chillicothe, Boyce was an excellent student and graduated Valedictorian of her high school class. After graduation, she started working at the Chillicothe bank and became a valued employee.
She began dating her high school superintendent, W.E. Hancock and when WWII ended they married on August 25, 1945. Boyce and W.E. moved to Quanah, TX where they lived for 14 years. Their daughter Rue Jean was born there in 1948. Boyce was a very talented pianist and organist and enjoyed playing for church services and Sunday school classes at their church. The family moved to Grand Prairie TX for a year. There Boyce started working in a bank again. At the end of the year, however, W.E. had an offer he couldn’t refuse and the family moved to Sudan, TX where he served as School Superintendent for 10 years.
Boyce was again active in their church in Sudan as the pianist for church services. She also enjoyed new friends she met especially bridge friends. In 1970, Boyce and W.E. retired to Lubbock TX and Boyce worked in the Plains Bank for a few years. She also volunteered at one of the local hospitals. They were also able to visit their brothers and sisters and daughter frequently, as well as go on some nice cruises. When W.E.’s health declined Boyce was a faithful and loving caregiver to him until his death in 1999.
In 2008 Boyce moved to The Forum at Memorial Woods, in Houston, to be close to her daughter and resided there until her death.
Boyce is survived by her daughter, Rue Jean Hancock; nieces and nephews, Jane Ann and Gary Casey, Mark and Phyllis Young, Bill and Theresa Young, Raymond and Burna Jo Hancock, Tom and Stacy Hancock, Sandra and Rick Cunningham, Joe and Melissa Hancock, Sue and Ronnie Brown, and many great nieces and nephews.
