Jimmy was born in 1956 to G.O. and Marie Hill in Abilene, Texas. Jimmy attended Stewart and Haynes Elementary Schools, Evans Junior High, and Monterey High School (class of 1975) before continuing his education at Texas Tech University and Baylor College of Dentistry (class of 1981). He married Karen Kerr Hill of Lubbock, TX in 1979. He practiced dentistry in Lubbock for 38 years, selling his practice in 2015 to Dr. Camie Davis - who became more than a business partner; she was a cherished friend.
From an early age, Jimmy was fascinated by all things mechanical and had a lifelong passion for cycling. As a boy, he freely roamed the city of Lubbock on his bicycle and once built a go-cart from a wagon and a lawnmower engine. He proudly drove his creation from his house to the Monterey Church of Christ parking lot, barely making it back home before the police arrived. At age fourteen, Jimmy got his motorcycle license and bought his first motorcycle—a Honda 100.
In high school, he played football for Monterey and carried himself with the confidence that defined him throughout his life. He loved a good pair of hiking boots, riding motorcycles, slalom water skiing, jeeping through the mountains, and chasing new challenges with friends and family (like the 100-mile bicycle races at the Hotter’N Hell Hundred). He enjoyed golf — and those who played with him might lovingly say he was among the worst golfers they had ever seen — but he always showed up ready to have a good time. He experienced a lot of joy from experiencing life fully and sharing those experiences with the people he loved.
Jimmy and Karen loved to travel. They found great satisfaction in walking and biking the entire Camino de Santiago in France and Spain. They also walked and cycled across the borderlands of Scotland and England. They regularly served as traveling dentists in Guatemala with friends from dental school in San Lucas Toliman and with their church at New Life Children’s Home in Villa Nueva. They enjoyed their time at their family lake house at Possum Kingdom Lake and their mountain home in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Amidst a lifetime of remarkable achievements and adventures, his greatest legacy remains his steadfast faith and love for Jesus Christ. His children hold dear the daily image of him seated in his chair early each morning, drinking coffee and immersed in his Bible. He desired to be remembered simply for a hard working life and for his quiet service and devotion to the Lord.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, G.O. and Marie Hill, and his brother, Bruce Hill. He is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Karen Hill; daughter Elaine Futrell and husband Nathan; son Alex Hill and wife Macey; grandchildren Clara and Julia Futrell, and Elliott, Molly, and Bonnie Hill; sister Sue Price and husband Gary; brother-in-law Ron Kerr and wife Holly; sister-in-law Deborah Henely; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Steve Crowell for the companionship shared on numerous bike rides, as well as Clint Sheumaker and Gary Light for their steadfast visits and support throughout his illness. They also fondly remember his longtime friend and Monterey High School classmate, the late Scott Hardy, who faithfully brought together Jimmy and their old Monterey High School friends, and extend special thanks to neighbors Sixtus and Kyu Mee Atabong for their ongoing friendship and kindness.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Fountain Hills Assisted Living in Wolfforth for the kindness, compassion, and care they provided during Jimmy’s final days.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
