John Barnes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at the age of 79. His life was marked by a deep love for his family, a strong Christian faith, a commitment to his community, and an enduring love for the great state of Texas.
John was born on November 13, 1946, in Quanah, TX, to J.L. Barnes and Emma Lorice Anderson Barnes. He was raised with strong family values and carried those values with him throughout. While in high school, he was voted Mr. Manners, which is a title he embodied his whole life.
In 1971, John married the love of his life, Dana McCaleb Barnes. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared a life filled with love, faith, hard work, and countless memories.
John and Dana were blessed with three children: Kevin, Kelly, and Kimberly. His family was his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment.
John was a man who believed in working hard, serving others, and making a difference. He began his professional career with the American Cancer Society and later worked with the West Texas Chamber of Commerce before becoming self-employed. His career reflected his energy, determination, and belief in the opportunities available.
A proud Red Raider, John had a special place in his heart for Texas Tech Football. He loved cheering on the Red Raiders and sharing that passion with family and friends.
Above all, John was a man of faith. He loved the Lord and trusted in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. His family takes comfort in knowing that, while his earthly life has ended, his eternal life has begun. His legacy of faith, love, family, and service will continue through the generations who follow him.
John is survived by Dana, his wife of 55 years; his children, Kevin and Julie Barnes of Round Rock, Kelly and Camille Barnes of Athens, Kim and Craig Thomson of Lubbock; his grandchildren Makenna and Maclaine Barnes, Abigail, Grady and Colby Thomson, Mary Elizabeth and Sallie Barnes, his great-grandchild Westen, his sister and brother-in-law, Lynda and Van Sparkman of Quanah, his sister-in-law, Jan Elliott of Uvalde, and seven nephews and two nieces.
His family is grateful for the years they were given with him and for the lasting memories he leaves behind.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
