John Robert Brady, J.R. passed away to join his Father in Heaven on June 27, 2025, at the age of 83 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Linda Brady, his son Brent Brady of Paris Texas, and his daughter Shannon Brady Geihsler of Lubbock. He is Grandpa to 4 grandchildren: Ashley Nic Brady, Elizabeth Nichole Brady Orris, Grady Cole Geihsler, and John Wyatt Brady as well as Great Grandpa to two great grandchildren, Brady Lance Brady, and Jaxon Wayne Melber.
J.R. was born in Salina, Kansas on August 13, 1942 to Leon and Elizabeth Brady and was the youngest of 3 boys. During his youth he played football at Seaman High School in Topeka, Kansas. He received a football scholarship to attend Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, but returned to Topeka after a year so he could be with his sweetheart, Linda Woodward. They married on August 25, 1963.
After graduating from Washburn University in 1965, J.R. worked for Payless Shoes. In 1972, he took a job in Waco, Texas as general manager of Dan’s Dairy Queens. In 1983, the family moved to Lubbock, Texas after purchasing the Dairy Queens from Jimmy & Mae Martin. J. R., Linda and their son Brent worked very hard to repair and remodel the Dairy Queens. Their son-in-law Ken Geihsler later joined the business. They built and bought stores in Amarillo, Abernathy, and Clovis, New Mexico. J.R. also served as President and Board member of the Texas Dairy Queen Operator’s Council. After operating the Dairy Queens for 25 years, J.R. and Linda sold the Dairy Queens to Ken and Shannon. J.R. and Linda spent their retirement at their ranch raising show cattle and improving their property. J.R. was an animal lover and the cattle were no exception. He was a hard worker with a great sense of humor, a natural born leader and is greatly loved and missed by his family. J.R.’s family would like to mention and thank Irene Martinez, who has become a member of their family, for all the prayers and loving care she has given to J.R. and the rest of the family over the past 42 years. The family would also like to thank Joanne High, who has helped in his care, as well as Tressa, Rachael, Tammy, and the rest of the wonderful people at Adams Assisted Living where J.R. has had excellent and loving care. The family would also like to express their heart-felt appreciation to the folks at Hospice of Lubbock, especially his nurse Casandra and his chaplain Elizabeth Abraham.
