John Dale McCuan II, 46, of Lubbock, was received into his Savior’s arms on July 13 after a brief illness in Covenant Hospital. John, called Chip by his family, was born on January 4, 1971 in St. Mary’s Hospital to his loving parents Jerry and Wanda.
He grew up in Ralls and worked for his parents at the family pharmacy. In Ralls High School he was active in the National Honor Society, and played clarinet in the band along with writing a column for the school newspaper. During his senior year he became a powerlifter. Calculus and physics were his forte and he spent hours mastering the concepts.
He was class salutatorian and then attended the University of Chicago. He graduated summa cum laude from Texas Tech University. Voracious reading habits made him an excellent student of world history. He could converse in Mandarin and German and enjoyed his time in Shanghai for a semester.
He was a great cook and his family looked forward to the elaborate meals he meticulously prepared. Several years ago he rescued a homeless puppy and named her Sophia. She was always at his side ready for a treat and a belly rub. One of his hobbies was finding great clothes at ridiculously low prices at Savers and Goodwill—the cheaper the better.
John was a true and loyal friend and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was dearly loved by his family and he cherished his aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the sweetest, kindest older brother and served as a tremendous source of inspiration to his brother. Most importantly, John trusted in Jesus Christ as his Savior.
John is survived by his parents Jerry and Wanda of Lubbock; a brother Clay, and his wife Jennifer of Austin and a niece, Shan.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people who cared for him in the hospital especially the Medical ICU nurses who were always kind and professional.
