Johnny H. Serrano was born on October 3, 1946, in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He was raised in Roswell, New Mexico, and passed away on April 4, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Yolanda Serrano; two daughters, Annette (Johnny) Weeks and Cheri (Arthur) Chavason; and his two grandchildren, Kenzie and Aaden. Johnny is also survived by his sister, Rachel (Manuel) Garcia, and his brothers, Danny, James, and Jake Serrano.
All of Johnny’s life, he was driven by a strong love for life and his family. He began working in the restaurant business as a busboy, and with a strong work ethic and determined resolve, he became a restaurant entrepreneur, owner, and manager of several successful establishments located throughout eastern New Mexico and West Texas, including Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Leal’s, O’Bannon’s, and The Lone Wolf.
Johnny found joy in many interests throughout his life, including his love of restoring old Mustangs and his prized 1966 Shelby Cobra. He was a small-wing aircraft pilot and owned his own plane, flying his family throughout the United States. An avid tennis player for decades, Johnny and his brothers played in many tournaments across New Mexico and Texas. He also loved fly fishing for hours with his brothers in the Animas River near Navajo Dam in New Mexico.
With as much passion as he put into his hobbies, Johnny’s greatest love was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Yolanda, and together they had two beautiful daughters. He loved his girls and always made sure they had everything they needed, from a delicious homemade meal to words of encouragement. He instilled in them a deep strength and provided opportunities that shaped their confidence, teaching them their value and raising them to be strong, self-assured, and secure in who they are.
Johnny also had a great love of animals. He enjoyed sitting on his back porch, watching his dogs and cats play, and observing birds as they landed in his backyard.
A private family service will be held in honor of Johnny’s life. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Haven Animal Care Shelter and giving your favorite furry pet an extra tasty treat.
