Joe was born on August 14, 1938, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, to Margaret Behling Musil and John Frank Musil. He grew up in Milwaukee, where he developed his signature quick wit, strong work ethic, and knack for making friends anywhere he went. After joining the United States Air Force, Joe was stationed at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas. There, fate stepped in and he met the love of his life, Georgia Faye Cornelius, who quickly discovered that behind Joe’s mischievous grin was a heart of gold. The two were married shortly after. Joe and Georgia shared a deep and enduring love that lasted 54 years until her passing in 2014.
Encouraged by Georgia’s unwavering belief in him, Joe pursued higher education and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Though he began his career as an accountant, his natural warmth and sense of humor soon led him into a successful career in sales and management. He spent most of his professional life with Tersco, Inc., where his colleagues and customers became lifelong friends and extended family. Joe had the rare gift of being able to talk to anyone and most of the time, to make them laugh.
Together, Joe and Georgia raised four children who adored (and occasionally tested) him: Danny Eugene Musil, Margaret Pauline Moore, Becky Diane Musil, and Joseph Carl Musil.
Joe is survived by his children and their families:
• Danny Musil and his late wife Shirley and their children Jeanette Hastings and husband Bryan (their children Rebekah and Brandon), Stacy Whitaker (her children Dawnielle, Travis, Allyssa, and Kole), and Ammie Musil (her daughter Deanna)
• Pauline Moore and her husband Jerry, and their daughter Katelyn Nicole Moore
• Becky Musil
• Joseph Carl Musil, and his son Joseph Jeremy Musil and wife Anel
• Lorea Seidel, his bonus daughter
• Dumbo, his beloved dog and companion
Joe took great joy in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished time spent with his family and was always quick with a smile, a joke, a story, or a helping hand.
Joe’s interests were as wide-ranging as his sense of humor. He helped to coach Danny’s baseball team, played endless card games at the kitchen table (winning more than his fair share), and was a squirrely tennis player with unpredictable shots that should never have gone in. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, and watching “As the World Turns” with his mother-in-law, Thelma Cornelius—a standing appointment that no one dared interrupt. He devoted many years of service to the Lubbock Lions Club and was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Men’s Downtown Bible Study. He shared his love of the outdoors through family camping and fishing trips, teaching his children the simple joy of casting a line.
A true Texan at heart, Joe was a proud supporter of Texas Tech football, the Dallas Cowboys, the Green Bay Packers, and more recently, the Kansas City Chiefs. Above all, he loved people—his kindness, humor, and generosity left an impression on everyone who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lake Ridge Memorial Designers at 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 15th, in Lubbock, Texas. Joe will be laid to rest beside his beloved Georgia at Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas. The Celebration of Life will be public, and all who were touched by Joe’s life are welcome to attend and share a story or two about him.
While Joe might have left the table, his stories will be told for generations to come, and his legacy of laughter, love, and faith will live on in all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army in Joe’s memory at https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/.
