Kenneth Eugene Huffaker passed away on September 29, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born November 27, 1934, in Grassland, Texas, to Herman Eugene Huffaker and Ollie Olive Hicks Huffaker. Kenneth grew up on the family farm in Grassland. He graduated from Tahoka High School in 1952. He married Sonja Sooter in Slaton, Tx on September 7, 1956, and was soon drafted into the United States Army. Upon his discharge, he returned to Grassland where he continued farming until he moved to Lubbock in 1985 to start a construction company, building metal buildings.
He enjoyed the outdoors, preferring to spend his free time fishing with friends and family. If there was one thing Kenneth loved more than fishing, however, it was the ensuing fish fry he would host to mark a successful trip to the lake. He was a huge fan of Lady Raider basketball and got to host the team for one of his famous fish frys. Fried crappie wasn’t the only dish he was famous for, though, as he would make sure everyone he knew was stocked up with his homemade pickles. You should be able to ascertain from this that Kenneth loved to give, a direct reflection of his steadfast faith.
He was a strong leader, only needing to point his crooked finger to get something done. His response to any criticism of his lifestyle was, “I don’t know how you think I got to be ninety years old.” Truthfully, we don’t know how he got to be ninety years old, but we are so grateful that he did.
Kenneth is survived by wife Sonja Huffaker, son Scott Huffaker (Kristi), daughter Marla Cook (Danny), brother Bobby Huffaker (Libby), sister Loudy Johnston (Jay), five grandkids and seven great grandkids. He is preceded in death by parents Ollie and Herman Huffaker, brothers Glen and Roy Huffaker, sisters Berneice Webb, Ruth Keese, and Earlene Calvert, son Brad Huffaker, and granddaughter Kelsi Cook.
