Larry was born on December 5, 1939, in Big Spring, Texas. As a young boy, he and his mother moved to Galveston, TX. Larry learned to survive amid hardship. To earn money, he sold fish, shrimp, and crabs to local restaurants and untangled fishermen's lines beneath the Galveston pier. Though life was difficult, Larry learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance—lessons that shaped the rest of his life. It is a beautiful reminder that God's grace is greater than our circumstances and that hope can overcome even the most difficult beginnings.
Gifted both academically and athletically, Larry excelled at Austin High School, earning scholarships to Lamar University, where he played both football and basketball. He later transferred to San Angelo State University and continued competing in both sports.
Larry's career reflected his adventurous spirit and strong work ethic. He had many jobs - His love for the ocean led him to own and operate a scuba diving business before he became a draftsman for the City of Austin. He later dedicated five years to the March of Dimes, where he met the love of his life, Judith Preston. They married in December 1971 and built a life rooted in unwavering love, faith, and devotion. Following moves to San Antonio and Austin, Larry spent the next 25 years farming in Bovina, Texas, and the last 16 in Lubbock, TX.
Larry gave generously of his time, serving in the Bovina Baptist Church and on the City Council, School Board, and as Municipal Judge.
Of all the roles he filled throughout his life, his favorites were always husband and father. He loved Judith with all his heart and was profoundly proud of the family they built together.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Hodnett; his daughters, Rebecca Smallwood and Jo Hodnett; his cherished grandchildren, Trevor Smallwood, Kaylin Mayers, Jacob Hodnett, Bo Hodnett, Stetson Smitherman, Cason Smitherman, and Garison Smitherman; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Natalie Smallwood and Hudson Hodnett.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the IABC Benevolence Fund in Larry's memory at https://iabc.tpsdb.com/Give/memorial.
