Maria Eva (Hernandez) Johnson

Maria Eva Hernandez, 77, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on December 8, 1947, in George West, Texas, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, and hard work.

Maria was the daughter of Jesus and Ofelia Nerois. She grew up surrounded by a large and loving family and carried that sense of connection throughout her life. In June of 1968, she married Juan Luis Hernandez, with whom she had two children. Later in life, she found love again and married Thomas Johnson in July of 1996.

A dedicated worker, Maria spent many years employed as a housekeeper at Levelland Development and UMC Hospital. Her commitment to her work reflected her strong sense of responsibility and care for others.

Maria was a devoted Catholic whose faith guided her through life’s joys and challenges. She found comfort and strength in her beliefs and remained steadfast in her devotion throughout her life.

She found joy in simple pleasures, especially cooking for those around her and working on crossword puzzles. These hobbies brought her peace and were often shared with loved ones.

Maria is lovingly remembered by her son Michael Hernandez; sisters Lucia Charo, Emma Lytle, Juanita Hernandez, Rosa Casas, Connie White, and Josie Nerosis; grandchildren Jasmine Hernandez, Sabrina Hernandez, William Wendell, Angelina Hernandez, and Gabriel Hernandez; and great-grandchildren Royce Garses, Malachi Garses, Elijah Garses, January Garses, Eddie Garses, Haley Wendell, and Noah Wendell.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jesus and Ofelia Nerois; son Julian Hernandez; second husband Thomas Johnson; daughter-in-law Donna Hernandez; sister Antonia Nerois; brothers Frank Nerois and Jesse Jr. Nerois; and nephew Sammy Nerois.

A viewing & visitation for Maria will be held Monday, June 30, 2025 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, TX 79407. A viewing & visitation will occur Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, Texas 79407. A rosary service will occur Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel, 5740 19th St., Lubbock, Texas. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5802 22nd St., Lubbock, Texas.
