

Texas. She was married to Marvin Platten for 69 years. Marion was born on 11 December, 1929
in St. Paul, Minnesota to Hugo and Martha Middlestaedt.
Marion was a talented artist and musician. She loved travel and adventure which she enjoyed
over many years with her family. While living in Puerto Rico and Japan, she studied wood block
printing before moving to Lubbock, Texas. Marion graduated from the University of Minnesota
where she studied printmaking and sculpture. Marion was active in the Prairie Winds Chapter of
Sweet Adelines choir and was the founding president of Friends of KOHM - KTTZ local public
radio station. Devoted to her Lutheran faith, she became choir director for many years at Historic
Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as LWML president for two years. Over many years,
Marion carved 12 wooden Apostle Shields which now surround the altar at Redeemer. She
worked at Coronado High School for 20 years, before retiring.
Survivors include daughter, Andrea and her husband Lonnie Haynes of Leesburg, Florida; son,
Steven and his wife Mary Catherine Hasert of Lubbock, Texas; daughter, Kathryn Combes of
Nakuru, Kenya; son Charles of Bremerton, Washington; seven grandchildren and five greatgrand
children.
The family suggests memorials to the Historic Redeemer Lutheran Church of Lubbock, Texas.
A celebration of Marion’s life will take place at the Historic Redeemer Lutheran Church in
Lubbock at 11am on Wednesday, July 30th.
