Marlene graduated from Lubbock High School in 1956, then earned her degree in Accounting from Texas Technological College in 1960. After graduation, she worked for JC Armstrong, CPA, for nearly 20 years.
Afterwards, opening her own practice, she dedicated her entire career to accounting and tax preparation, retiring in 2023 after more than six decades of service. Marlene has been a devoted servant of Jesus and member of First Christian Church her entire life. Her church family meant the world to her. She was also a devoted member of the South Plains Cotton-Pickin’ Tole Painters Club for more than 10 years. She volunteered with the South Plains Fair fine arts department for many decades as well. Marlene was not only an intelligent business woman, she was artistic and spent as much time as possible honing her painting and quilting skills.
In 1963, Marlene married Doug Hutton. Together, they frequently traveled for his job, staying in places such as Wappinger’s Falls, New York and San Jose, California. Their most memorable stop was Ernie's in San Francisco, which became a favorite recollection. Doug and Marlene adopted two children: Michael and Wendy. Michael and his wife, Tammy (Stonehouse), have four children: Catherine, Laura, Graham, and Heidi.
Marlene was predeceased by her daughter, Wendy Taylor. Alongside Doug, Marlene lovingly raised Wendy’s four sons, Dawson, Shaddy, Tyson, and Derrick, helping shape them into the fine young men they are today.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Doug, her sister, Kittie Ellen Graham and her husband, Russell; her brother, Marvin Porr Jr. and his wife, Kathy; her son, Michael Hutton and his wife, Tammy; and eight grandchildren.
Marlene was known for her unwavering commitment to family, her sharp mind, and her generous heart. She made friends wherever she went. People were drawn to her because she cared enough to be a listening ear and accepted people as they were. Her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on through her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her.
Rosemary, of Hospice of the South Plains, was an absolutely outstanding help in Marlene's last days. Our family will be forever grateful for her loving care.
