

Marlene Joyce Evans Spurrier, of Lubbock, was born on September 28, 1934, in Collingsworth County, Texas to Alton Joyce Evans and Dollie Marie (Inman) Evans. Marlene grew up in Lubbock County and graduated from Shallowater High School in 1952. She worked as an operator at AT&T for 28 years - with perfect attendance. Marlene possessed a strong work ethic. While at the phone company, she served as union steward for Communication Workers of America (CWA). After retiring from AT&T, she went to work for TTU Communications for 10 years. Marlene considered many co-workers good friends.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Roger Evans, Betty Balis, and Joe Evans; and nephew, Mike Hagan. She is survived by her son Steve Spurrier of Garland; daughter Stephanie Spurrier of Lubbock; daughter Jennifer Spurrier, son-in-law Walter Bergonzi, and grandson Matteo Bergonzi, all of Lubbock; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Garrison and Bender Terrace, where she spent her last years. Additionally, the family is grateful to Dr. Laura Baker who provided compassionate care, never gave up on Marlene, and appreciated her sense of humor.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 12th, at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. She will be laid to rest by her family.
Marlene will be remembered for her beautiful smile and wicked sense of humor. She did not preach, but simply set a good example. Her family is comforted that she is now at peace and will always cherish her memory.
Marlene never met a stray she that she did not like. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to an animal charity of your choice.
