Mary Henritta Payne

February 9, 1944 – September 9, 2025

Mary Henrietta Payne, affectionately known to many as Mamie or Mammaw, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 81.

Mary was born on February 9, 1944, in McClean, Texas, to Willie Green Pearson and Sarah Seleaner (Burgess). She graduated from McLean High School and built a career with AT&T, from which she later retired.

On February 7, 1964, Mary married the love of her life, Lawrence L. Payne. Together, they built a loving home filled with joy, laughter, and deep family roots in Lubbock, TX.

Mary’s passions included reading, watching hummingbirds in Colorado, and enjoying the music of Ryan Kelly and Celtic Thunder. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—showering them with endless love, stories, and treats.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert Payne and David Payne, both of Lubbock, TX; 13 grandchildren, Joslynn Cooke and husband Joel of Midland, TX, Cassie Payne of Lubbock, TX, Trevor Payne and fiancée Alexis of Lubbock, TX, Jennifer Payne and fiancé Cody of Magnolia, TX, Steven Petrey and girlfriend Chloe of Lonetree, CO, Danielle Petrey and wife Katy of Lubbock, TX, and Matthew Petrey and wife Megan of New Braunfels, TX; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty (BooDoo) Pearson of Lubbock, TX, Linda and Ray Hunter of Albuquerque, NM, and Donna Pearson and Linda Loggins of Temple, TX. As well as a handful of grand-dogs.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry; parents, Willie and Sarah; sisters, Shirley Jean and Helen Fern; and best friend, Rosemary Bryarly.

Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A celebration of Mary’s life will take place on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Resthaven Abbey Chapel, with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mary's faith, warmth, and boundless love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
