Melvin Carl Lowrey

Melvin graduated from Plains ISD in 1962, where he excelled in track. He held the school’s mile relay record until the mid-1990s and later attended South Plains College.

A successful farmer and rancher, Melvin devoted much of his life to working the land and providing for his family. Farming and ranching were more than occupations; they reflected his strong work ethic, determination, and dedication.

Melvin was deeply committed to his community. He served on the school board for many years, including as president, and held several leadership positions within the Farmers Union. Through these roles, he supported local families, agriculture, and the community he loved.

He enjoyed traveling, discovering new places, and creating lasting memories. As a pilot, Melvin embraced the adventure and freedom of flight. He especially cherished time at the lake house in Granbury, where he enjoyed water skiing and sharing fun-filled days with family and friends.

Those who knew Melvin will remember his playful sense of humor and his gift for making people laugh. He was always ready with a joke or story and was known for his willingness to help others. Whether someone needed a helping hand, advice, or a dependable friend, Melvin was there.

Above all, Melvin loved his family. He was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and treasured the time he spent with them. His hard work, generosity, humor, and love will continue to influence his family for generations to come.

He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Lowrey of Lubbock, Texas; his son, Kevin Lowrey of Idalou, Texas; his son-in-law, Shannon Patton of Lubbock, Texas; his sister-in-law, Hazel Lowrey of Plains, Texas; his grandchildren, Justin Lowrey and wife, Britney, Makenzie Patton, Lauren Lowrey, Mason Patton, and Bristan Lowrey; his stepchildren, Deanna Shoemaker and James Shoemaker; his great-grandchildren, Ede, Wilder, and Pia; and many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Fern and Carl Lowrey; his brothers, Roy, Coy, and Jerry Lowrey; his daughter, Tonya Patton; and his nephew, Chad Lowrey.

Melvin leaves behind a legacy of hard work, laughter, generosity, community service, adventure, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed, while the memories, stories, and love he shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
