

He was born on the family farm near Clifton, Texas to parents Nora L. (Meador) McDougal and Melvin McDougal. He attended Frenship High School, graduating in 1954. He attended Texas Tech University, studying business.
He spent a long fulfilling career serving in management at multiple retail establishments, including TG&Y for 27 years and Winn’s Crafts Etc. for eight years. While at TG&Y, he worked at many different stores, including Carrollton, Amarillo, Spearman, Abilene, Odessa, Midland, and Lamesa. While at Winn’s, he worked in Odessa, Pleasanton, Bay City, Polacios, San Antonio, and Hereford. He retired in 2011 as the co-manager of the Lubbock Hobby Lobby after 17 years of service. He told his daughter that he stopped counting his moves after the 42nd move! In addition, he had taught business and retail at Odessa College and received his real estate license.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and went through basic training at Fort Bliss. He went through Army Finance School and then transferred to Munich and Straubing, Germany serving in the Finance Corps. During his time in Germany, he traveled all over Germany, France, Italy, and The Netherlands. His favorite place was Venice, Italy, where he enjoyed sitting outside the small cafes drinking coffee, watching people and feeding the pigeons. He was active during the Korean War.
He enjoyed several hobbies, including gardening, collecting coins, playing golf, and watching football - especially Texas Tech and the Dallas Cowboys. He was also a 32 Degree Mason and belonged to the Milwaukee Avenue Church of Christ. He loved to travel, including an Alaskan cruise with his daughters Sophie and Shirley.
Melvin had two Shelties he loved: Coco, who passed away several years ago, and Lucky.
He was passionate about his work and family. He is survived by his two daughters, Sophie McDougal (Shirley) and Patty Richards (Tim); his grandchildren, Chester McDougal (Stephany) and Monique Waggoner (Roy); and his best friend since middle school, Raymond Peek (Diane).
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and his brother, Arthur McDougal.
