1924- 2013
Mike Kerr, a man who loved his family, his friends and his country passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, in Roswell, Georgia. A native and proud Oklahoman who became a decorated military hero (Bronze Star) with combat service in World War 2, Korea and Viet Nam. He served in the 1st, 2nd and 4th armored divisions and traveled to 118 foreign countries throughout his career.He retired from the Army as a Command Sergeant Major and moved to Lubbock Texas where he met and married the love of his life, the late Cora Kerr.
He was born Feb 24, 1924 in Mason Valley, Ark to George
Lowrey, farmer, and Minnie Susan Jane Kerr, housewife. He moved to Oklahoma when
he was 5 and lived in rural Oklahoma before his military career. Mike was happiest watching the NY Yankees, fishing, cooking and spending time with his family. He is survived by 2 daughters, Debbie Gaddy Marcell and husband, Marvin, of Missouri City, TX and Tina Gaddy Taliaferro and husband, Kim, of Roswell, GA. He especially enjoyed visiting his granddaughter, Molly Morris Cooper and husband, Michael Cooper, and their twin boys, Colton and Dylan in Houston. He enjoyed attending and watching football and baseball with his grandsons, Tyler Taliaferro, of Jacksonville, FL. and Dustin Taliaferro, of Atlanta, GA. A great legacy Mike leaves us all, but particularly the men is his sterling example that he lived daily, of how a man loves, respects and treats his wife. He also taught us so much about cooking, gardening and landscaping, organization skills and of course love of Country. Mike is also survived by many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Cora, his sister, Floy M Norton, his brothers, Fred Homer Kerr and Bob Kerr.
Visitation will be at 12:00, Friday, September 20th with services immediately following at 1:00pm, at Resthaven Funeral Home in Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel, followed by graveside services in Resthaven Memorial Park, Lubbock, Texas.
