

Ray Matney, 94, passed away into God’s loving embrace on Friday, May 17, 2013 at his home. He was born on April 8, 1919 in Charlie, Texas to T.B. and Ollie Gertrude Matney. Ray served during World War II with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was proud to be part of the Greatest Generation.
Ray married Zerne Johnson on June 8, 1946 in Abilene, and they immediately moved to Lubbock. He was an electrical contractor and owner of Matney Electric until his retirement in 1981. During his free time he loved to fish, do woodworking and spend time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling in his motor home. Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife Zerne and brothers Leslie and Earl. Surviving twin brothers are Warren Matney of Austin and Wayne Matney of Odessa.
He is survived by his daughter Gayla Dirks and husband Jimmy of Lubbock; his daughter Rayna Shaunfield and husband George of Dickinson; and his daughter Jill Chorneyko and husband David of Houston. He is also survived by four grandchildren – Monica Groeschel of Houston; Brent Dirks of Flower Mound; Kirk Shaunfield of Longmont, Colo. and Angela Snyder of Gaithersburg, Md. Ray also had seven great-grandchildren – Abigail and Megan Groeschel; Madeline and Ryan Dirks; Audrey and Brooke Snyder; and Waverly Shaunfield.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 in the chapel at Broadway Church of Christ with Tim Talley officiating. A military burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Condolences may be offered at www.resthavenfuneralhome.com.
