Royce L Barnes

Royce Lee Barnes (Grandpa) was born in Sentinel, OK on November 3, 1929 to Donnie and Cornelia. He was raised in Amarillo and left school to join the Army in 1946. After serving in both the Army and then the Navy, he married Patsy Green (Granny) on September 28, 1950. As a young husband and father, Royce provided for his family by working in the flooring business for several years before beginning a successful career in sales. He worked for Southwestern Drug, Duo-fast and Behren’s Drug.

Royce and Pat became grandparents in 1979 and were blessed with a total of seven grandchildren. In addition to being the best grandpa ever, he and Granny traveled the country with the Prairie Dog Sam RV Club and participated in the Special Olympic Torch Run for 10 years. He was very interested in genealogy and compiled a book titled The Barnes Coat of Arms and Our Barnes History. He and Granny were also members of Southside Church of Christ and traveled with the Gospel Journey Bookstore. In later years, Grandpa devoted himself to caring for Granny until her death in 2012. Since then and throughout his life, he was known for his unconditional love, generosity, and joyful personality. He lived to serve others in his family, church and community.

He was proceeded in death by his wife Pat and his siblings Catherine, Opal, Francis, C. H., D. H., Curtis, and Theron.

He passed from this life on February 9th 2019. Those left to remember him and carry on his legacy are his children and their spouses Jackie and Jimmie Weddel of Wolfforth; Steve and Nita Barnes and Greg and Susan Barnes, all of Lubbock. Grandchildren Tony and wife Kelly of Rockport, TX; Jennifer Barnes-Oliver and husband Reed of Austin, TX, Jessica Griffin of Denton, TX, and Ryan Barnes of Lubbock; Nathan and wife Leslee, Josh and wife Isabel, all of Ft. Worth; Suzanna Nelson and husband Nick of Mountainview, CA; eight great grandchildren as well as extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Resthaven’s Mausoleum Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock or The American Cancer Society.
