Ruby “Nanny” Lucille Roady Merrick of Lubbock, TX, Passed away peacefully on April 23 at the age of 104 surrounded by loved ones. She was born to the late Rose Etta and John Lafette Roady, on June 22, 1913, in Brady, Ok.
She is preceded in death by her 5 brothers: Dewey, Ralph, Charlie, John Lafette Jr., and Raymond, as well as her 2 sisters: Kate and Netty. Ruby and her & siblings were raised on a prosperous farm in a 2- story white-washed frame house, built in 1910 by her father and brothers.
Ruby married the late Fred Ireland Merrick, who served in the US Army in the Philippines before World War II. He was one of the earliest Public Accountants in Lubbock, Ruby workd in his office several years.
She is survived by their son John Merrick, 2 daughters Barbara Merrick Gibbons and Nancy Barnes, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and numerous great-great grandchildren.
In her memoirs, Ruby leaves us with the kind of wisdom that can only come from a life well-lived: “I wonder if people live in such a hurry and hustle now, that they don’t know the kind of easy, good living that we did growing up.” It is our hope that the life of this amazing woman will serve as an inspiration to all to slow down and enjoy each moment on this earth as the gift it is.
The Celebration of Life service for Ruby will be held at 2 P.M. Monday April 30, 2018 at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel with Dr. Shawn Brewer and Ryan wood officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. The visitation will begin at 1 P.M.
