

Sam was born on November 23, 1952, in Roswell, New Mexico. He graduated from Monterey High School before attending Texas Tech University, where he earned his degree in History and Education.
Sam spent 15 years in North Houston as a teacher and coach, coaching both football and baseball, before beginning a second career with Southwest Airlines. That career eventually brought him back to Lubbock, where he retired.
Sam enjoyed cheering on the Texas Tech Red Raiders, vacationing in Lake City, Colorado, and spending time with his dogs, who brought him great joy. Those who knew him will remember his quick wit and sense of humor. He also cherished the friendships he made growing up in Lubbock and remained close with many of those lifelong friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Myles Dewhurst and Clara Novella Dewhurst.
He is survived by his sons, Matthew Dewhurst and wife Whitney, and Brett Dewhurst and wife Ryanne; his grandchildren, Clayton, Hayes, Paige, Hunter, and Savannah; and many lifelong friends.
