Born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Sandy’s father recognized her fiery determination and spirited nature at a young age and nicknamed her “Jo” after the boxer Joe Louis, a name many people called her throughout her life. She attended Carlsbad schools, where she was an energetic cheerleader and a exceptional jitterbug dancer.
She married Ernest Quest Danil III in 1960 and attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education. While balancing the responsibilities of both wife and mother, she was repeatedly recognized as a President’s Annual Honors Four-Point Student. She later earned a Masters degree from that University. Over the years as she raised her family she worked as a bookkeeper and administrative assistant for a variety of professionals and offices. She also taught business, typing and reading at a junior high level in El Paso.
When the family moved back to Carlsbad she taught social studies and Carlsbad and worked for Westinghouse supporting the W.I.P.P. project.
In 1993 she married Bob Bacon. Together they enjoyed hosting family and church friends, traveling and playing tennis – with most games won by Sandy.
Sandy was a faithful member of the First Baptist churches in El Paso, Carlsbad, and Lubbock.
She enjoyed creating and caring for beautiful yards and flower gardens, and caring for her precious dogs. She especially enjoyed hosting gatherings for family who looked forward to her holiday meals and desserts, no one left the house hungry.
Sandy was known for her energetic drive and self-discipline. She held herself to high standards and expected the same of others, but at her best, she was also fun-loving and free-spirited. Her determination, hospitality and devotion to family and God left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Sybil Black, and her sisters, Marlene and Donna Sue. She is survived by her husband, Bob Bacon; her sons, David Daniel, Stephen Daniel, and Michael Daniel and his wife Stacia; her nieces, Michelle (Curtis) Perry, Angie Hulsey, and Lauren (Corey) Hegna; she her dearly loved granddaughters, Bethany, Kristen, and Ashleigh.
