OCTOBER 30, 1925 – SEPTEMBER 21, 2022
Sarah Jo Chumney Lewis, 96, left this earthly world, a month shy of her 97th birthday, and entered in heaven’s gates on September 21, 2022.
Her family mourns her, especially since we thought she would outlive us all based on of her will to live and vigor for life. She lived through the Great Depression, WWII, the creation of air conditioning, TVs, phones and computers – and took it all in stride.
Sarah was born on October 30, 1925 to Roy and Celia Chumney in Hamilton, Texas. She married her high school sweetheart, Joe Bailey Allen Jr, who died in WWII, with whom she had one son, Joe Bailey.
After the war, she married VA Krueger and had 3 children, Clay, Cynthia, and Vernon. Her final marriage to Fletcher Lewis was full of love and they had two daughters, Melissia and Dianna.
For many years, she worked at Texas Instruments in Lubbock, retiring in 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Levelland, which was her home for 70 years; but her lifeline was still in Hamilton, where she would return to be with family whenever possible - or someone would give her a ride.
She enjoyed traveling, and never met a stranger, mostly because she loved to talk to people. Her memory was incredible and she could tell you every detail of things even you forgot. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, spoiling them with home cooked meals and homemade quilts. She would make quilts for every special occasion, until her eyes failed her. Her homemade meals brought family to visit regularly; and you haven’t lived if you haven’t had her fudge, candies or pies. One of her joys later in life was driving her gold PT cruiser convertible, much to her children’s dismay, to play Skip-Bo or Canasta with family and friends. She was feisty and fun and wonderful, and will be missed by many, especially her children, grandchildren, family and friends.
The family would like to express appreciation for those who gave extra care and attention to Sarah: to Melissia’s family all the years she was in Levelland alone; to Mandy, Bruce, Cynthia and Laurie during her recent four months in VA; and to the staff at Heritage Oaks in Lubbock, Texas, who cared for Sarah in her final days. An additional thank you goes out to her Chumney family, including her nieces and nephews, for all their visits, trips and love.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Celia Chumney; her brothers and sisters, Billie, Glen, Carl, Virginia and Jimmy Chumney; by her husband Fletcher B. Lewis; by her great grandson Matthew Rose.
