Winnie Sue Nesbitt, of Lubbock, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021, at the age of 88.
Sue was born in Canton, Texas, on September 23, 1932 to Winford C. and Gladys Robinson. Moving to West Texas as a young child, Sue graduated from Ropes High School at the age of 16.
She married Kenneth D. Nesbitt on February 23, 1951 and they were able to celebrate 51 years together until his death in 2002.
Sue began her 54-year career in nursing while she and Kenneth raised their family and farmed in Muleshoe. She graduated from the South Plains College LVN program and later the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing RN program. Sue earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech and a Master of Science in Nursing from West Texas University in Canyon. She attended the Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health program at the UT Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas and was a member of its first certified group of nurse practitioners.
As a nurse, Sue worked for and served her community in many settings. In Muleshoe, she worked at both Green and West Plains hospitals, and was a nurse practitioner for the Texas Dept. of Health, serving four counties. In Lubbock, she held many roles at several area hospitals including University Medical Center, St. Mary’s, South Plains, Methodist, and Covenant. From 1990 until her retirement in 2015, she fulfilled a lifelong goal of teaching and mentoring nursing students at Covenant School of Nursing.
Sue was a member of the South Plains Church of Christ and a volunteer for Hospice of Lubbock. She found joy in her faith, family, nursing, students, learning, and her love of animals.
Sue is survived by her daughters, Robbie Bass and husband Jeff, of Fort Worth, and Tammy Nesbitt of Lubbock. Her grandchildren, Jennifer Holt and husband Mitch, of Austin, and Stephanie Bennett and husband Steven, of Tyler, as well as her great-grandchild, Weller Holt, of Austin.
She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; her parents, and brother, Danny Robinson.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 22nd from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock. Funeral services will take place at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23rd at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel with internment following. COVID protocols will be followed including required face coverings and social distancing. The service will also be livestreamed through Resthaven’s FaceBook page.
The family requests memorials be made to the South Plains Church of Christ or the Covenant School of Nursing in care of the Covenant Foundation.
