Born Sylvia Joy Johnson on January 20, 1932, in Red River County, Texas, to farmers Samuel Ben Johnson and Ellen LaMaster Johnson, Joy delighted in her family that included two older brothers and three younger sisters. She learned to cook as soon as she could reach the stovetop, and quickly took up other domestic arts and sciences like sewing, preserving foods, repurposing resources and managing supplies. As the eldest daughter she had many responsibilities and developed her abilities to take the lead, to keep her promises, to work hard, and to care for younger sisters as well as other family members.
She married the love of her life, Charles Eugene Condrey, in August 1948. After living in various cities in Texas and New Mexico, they eventually settled in Lubbock, Texas in the mid-1950s and made the city their permanent home. They loved being parents to their three children, and remained married to the end of her life.
Joy was passionate about her career as an administrative assistant to Dr. John Bradford, the dean of engineering at Texas Texas University for over twenty years. She was an active member of the National Secretaries Association. She was a faithful follower of Christ and attended Oakwood Baptist Church for over fifty years. She made numerous friends and enjoyed playing cards and games, creative cooking, traveling to historic places and mountainous getaways, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and extended family members.
Joy's immediate survivors include her husband, Charles E. Condrey, and children, Tana Kent of Wimberley, TX, Coby Condrey of Denton, TX, and Ben Condrey of Lubbock, TX, grandchildren Claire Kent, Sean Kent, and Brandon Kent, all of Austin, TX, her sisters Rowena Hopkins of Pilot Point, TX, Shirley Barr of Wichita Falls, TX, and Sonia Evans of Lubbock, TX, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, their spouses, and their children.
Visitation will be held Thursday July 21, 2022 from 11:00am - 1:00pm with Funeral Services following at 1:00pm in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Rev. Jinks White officiating.
