Talmage Loveless, a veteran of both the skies and the military, passed away peacefully in his home on May 26, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Slaton Texas on March 27, 1943, to Royce and Lawanda Loveless, Talmage's life was a testament to courage, dedication, and service.
Talmage's love for aviation took flight at a young age, manifesting in him obtaining his private pilot's license in 1960, before he even graduated at Lubbock Cooper High School in 1962. He would go on to earn his commercial pilot's license in 1963.
His passion for flying led him to join the U.S. Army in 1964, where he served as a flight instructor, training pilots who would go on to fly combat missions during the Vietnam War. Rising to the rank of Specialist 3rd Class, Talmage's leadership and expertise were instrumental in preparing fellow aviators for the challenges they would face.
Following his honorable discharge from the military in 1966, Talmage embarked on a distinguished career as an air traffic controller, a role he held from 1969 to 1998. His keen intellect, calm demeanor, and unwavering commitment to safety earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and travelers alike.
Soon after, Talmage once again answered the call to innovation, founding a business that contracted with the FAA to modernize the various systems and equipment used by air traffic controllers. His visionary leadership and tireless dedication to advancing aviation technology helped shape the future of air travel, ensuring safety and efficiency for generations to come.
When Talmage wasn't navigating the skies he was exploring the depths of the ocean through his frequent hobby of deep sea diving. His extensive knowledge of diving eventually earned him his Divemaster Certification.
Beyond his professional and personal achievements, Talmage was cherished for his infectious laughter, boundless humor, and his knack for storytelling. He was never afraid to speak his mind, and his honesty and candor, endeared him to all who knew him.
Talmage Loveless is survived by his devoted wife Margaret and beloved stepson Alex, who will cherish his memory. He also leaves behind a myriad of nephews and nieces who will miss having to fight him for that last piece of pecan pie.
His legacy of courage, innovation, and laughter will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, Captain Talmage, may your new wings carry you swifter than any vessel you ever piloted.
