August 14, 1922September 9, 2018

Thelma (Martin, Mize) Clark was born August 1922 in Illinois. A resident of Lubbock since 1975, she died September 9 at the age of 96. Thelma married Loren Eugene (Gene) Mize October 1940 in Illinois. He preceded her in death August 1990.

In April 1992, she married Owen L. Clark of Lubbock. Owen died in September 2009. Thelma’s visitation will be at Resthaven on Friday, September 14 from 6:30-8:00, with funeral service at South Plains Church of Christ on Saturday, September 15, at 2:00 pm after a private burial.

Thelma and Gene Mize had four sons and an adopted daughter. Two of the sons, Ricky and Gary, preceded her in death. Surviving are sons Bob Mize (Charlotte) of Lubbock, Danny Mize (Peggy) of Amarillo, a daughter Linda Rheinecker of Illinois, daughter-in-law Sue Work of Florida, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Thelma treated her daughters-in-law as her own, and was also very close to Owen’s three children, who survive her: Curtis Clark (Susan), Carol Daniel (Lloyd), and Catherine Frazey (David). She treasured her many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Thelma was humorous and outgoing, making friends wherever she lived and traveled. She was very involved in her local congregations in Belleville, Illinois, the Azores, and in Lubbock. Thelma was a Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultant, a volunteer at Covenant Medical Center, and a supporter of several mission and benevolent endeavors. Her final years were spent at Carillon Senior LifeCare Community, where she made many more friends. The family is grateful to staff of Carillon and Kindred Hospice for their care. The family suggests that donations in Thelma’s memory can be made to Lubbock’s Texas Boys Ranch or The Children’s Home of Lubbock.

I loved when Thelma came to the Women's Tea at our church in Hereford TX. We had so much fun when Danny would bring her with him when she would visit Danny and Peggy. She belonged there with us, we all loved her dearly! Danny is our Pastor at The Fellowship of Believers Church. I see where he gets his awesome personality. I loved when Danny and Thelma would share some of the jokes they played on each other, especially the snakehead they would pass back and forth secretly. Danny, Peggy and all the family are in our thoughts and prayers, may God give them peace, comfort and strength at this sad time. They will be fine because they know sweet Thelma is a beautiful Angel in Heaven now, she is whole again in peace with God by her side! We love you Danny and Peggy!

Thelma was one of those rare individuals who immediately makes others feel at ease and welcomed. I am grateful she met my uncle and made him happy!

The first time I ever met Thelma we just clicked! It was in Reno and she introduced herself and immediately, I knew she was going to be my friend! We only saw each other at the Helicopter Pilots Reunions, where we would laugh and share stories of our lives, our dogs, our kids and grandkids! And over the years we have shared emails, photos and more stories! Just thinking of Thelma now brings a big smile to my face. You have lived a life well done, my sweet friend......well done!

As a first grader living in Belleville,IL, I have fond memories of spending the school weeks with Thelma, Gene, and the boys when it snowed. We lived half a mile down a gravel road and I wasn't able to walk to the bus stop. Thelma would take me home from worship services Sunday and spoil me until daddy picked me up on Friday. Praying that the family finds comfort in memories and in the promises of God.
