Thelma Hammons

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at 1:00 PM in Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel, with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Thelma was born on November 4, 1927 in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, the youngest of 8 children, to Leslie and Viola Everhart Wilson.

She attended High School in Lone Wolf and married John Hammons on Nov 4, 1943. In 1949 she and John moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. After John’s retirement in 1991 they moved to Lubbock.

Thelma loved cooking, singing, playing the piano, reading, helping people and giving hugs. She also enjoyed traveling with John. They traveled a large part of the United States RVing from Michigan to Florida. In 1979 they took an extended vacation to Germany. She was also a member of Raintree Christian Church of Lubbock.

She is survived by her husband, John Hammons, of the home; two sons, Jerry Hammons of Lubbock and Don Hammons of Portales, New Mexico; beloved niece, Jo Atauvich of Lawton, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, David and Michel Hammons of Austin, Texas, Lacy Hammons of Dallas, Texas and Stephanie (Brien) McClary of Portales, New Mexico; two great grandchildren, Megan and Kamryn McClary of Portales, New Mexico.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations be made to Alzheimer’s Research, 3601 4th Street, MS 8321, Lubbock, Texas 79430.
