

Truman O. Lewis of Lubbock, died on Thursday May 5th, 2016 at the age of 87. He is preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Annie Lewis. Truman was born on November 24th, 1928 near Earth Texas on the family farm, where he grew up with his siblings Nelleen, Melvin and Linda. He graduated from Spring lake Earth High school in 1946. He attended West Texas State for a for a time where he played football before returning to work on the family farm. He was drafted into the US Army in 1951 during the Korean War where he was active for 2 years and was discharged from the reserves in 1956. He enrolled at Texas Tech in 1953 and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Mathematics. While at Tech as an undergraduate he met the love of his life Mona Dell Goodpasture, they married on January 25th, 1957 and had two sons. Upon graduation he was hired on with the aircraft company Ling Temco Vought where he worked on various Naval aircraft projects. He returned to Texas Tech in 1958 where he attained his masters in Mathematics with a minor in physics. In 1959 they moved to Cloudcroft New Mexico where he worked at Holloman AFB on various USAF projects. In the early 1960s he returned to Texas Tech to teach mathematics. In 1964 Truman and the family moved to Austin where he worked in the defense industry on projects in sonar and radar, while attending the University of Texas where he attained his PhD in mathematics in 1966. He then moved back to Lubbock where began teaching as a professor in the Texas Tech Math department for the next 20 years. In addition to his tenure at Tech he continued working on various NASA and defense projects. In the late 1960s he worked on the Apollo Lunar projects where he did analysis of the trajectories to the moon to ensure their validity and accuracy. Through out the 1970s and 90s he had many publications of his research published in Mathematical Statistical Analysis journals. In 1994 he retired from Texas Tech where he then devoted the next 22 years to working with his sons and grandson in the family farming operation, enjoying seeing the advances being made in American Agriculture. He is survived by his wife Mona and their sons Gary Lewis (Nelly) and Kirby Lewis (Betty). His siblings Nellen Dent, Melvin Lewis (Evelyn) and Linda Johnson (Ronnie).His 5 grandchildren Ashleigh McDonald (Clay), Cori Wright (Josh), Kelly Barnes (Shane), Casey Lewis and Angelina White (Adam). And his two great gransons Jase Wright and Mason Barnes. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Texas boys ranch of Lubbock. Above all else Truman was a man of faith in God. Devoted to his family, Country and always saying "Things are working out like they should."
