Virginia Dale Jones Smith exchanged her cross for a heavenly crown on March 24, 2021 at the age of 89. “Jenny” was born on April 27, 1931 in Wellington, Texas to William T. Jones and Nora B. (Anthony) Jones, the third of eight children. Both parents preceded her in death as did brothers Tom and Darland, and sisters Rene, Beth, and Shirley.
Virginia wed R. K. Smith, Jr. on December 30, 1955. That union thrived for 49 years until R. K.’s death in 2005. From that union sprang a stepdaughter, two daughters, and a son. By the time of Virginia’s death, she was blessed with eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Granny was rarely more joyful than when she was bouncing a little one on her lap.
Virginia’s life was committed to God, her husband, and her family. An unapologetic homebody, her journey rarely led her far from home. But it was in her home that she demonstrated her excellence as a wife, mama, encourager, admonisher, comforter, counselor, and nurturer. Her sweet spirit and quiet wisdom were evident in trials and in triumphs. Most poignant were the years she lovingly stood by R. K.’s side as he struggled with the cruel ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Those left to cherish and continue Virginia’s legacy include stepdaughter Jill (Smith) Olinger of South Elgin, Illinois; daughter Gay (Smith) Reed of Lubbock; son Kim Smith and wife Missy of Quanah; and daughter Robin Smith of Lubbock. Grandchildren include Missy Johnson and husband Jim of Leesburg, Virginia: Stephanie Larson and husband Jeff of Frisco; Hesper Holland and husband David of Lubbock; Erin Aaron and husband Brandon of Lubbock; Lauren Ford and husband Joshua of Lubbock; Dylan Smith and wife Kayla of Brownwood; Sara Crow and husband Danny of Orlando, Florida; and Austin Smith of Quanah. Virginia is also survived by sisters Vesta Brown of Amarillo and Colleen Chase and husband Jim of Shawnee, Kansas as well as sister-in-law Virginia Jones of Amarillo.
