

Cavendish – Russell James Fitzgibbons entered into eternal rest on October 23, 2014 at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow, VT.
He was born in Cavendish, VT on December 8, 1921 to Edward W. Fitzgibbons, Sr. and Etta (Johnson) Fitzgibbons. He was educated at Duttonsville Grade School.
Russell was employed by Belknap Mill (sawmill) in Cavendish from 1940 to 1942 until he went into the Army Air Corps from July 1942 to December 1945. He was stationed in England and attained the rank of Corporal. When Russell returned home, he went back to work at the sawmill and then worked at Kenwood Mills (blanket factory) for 5 years. He was employed in the Paint Dept. at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield for 26 years.
He loved going to the woods and sawing the wood with his brother in his backyard. In later years he enjoyed playing card with family and friends. Russell enjoyed himself at the 65th Anniversary Party his children gave this past July – when all the family, all 38 of us, were gathered from TX, PA, NY, NH and VT. Many friends joined in the celebration.
Russell was a member of the Cavendish Baptist Church for 82 years and the Wallace, McNulty, Hoyle American Legion Post # 4 for 68 ½ years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorraine (Wood); seven children: Barbara Snyder (Carl), Raymond Fitzgibbons (Cindy), Patricia Loeschhorn, Elaine Fitzgibbons, Brenda Hutchinson (Kurt), Brian Fitzgibbons and Susan Davis (Barry); nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Edward Fitzgibbons, Jr. (Mildred).
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Fitzgibbons.
Friends may call at the Cavendish Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 29 at 10:00 a.m. for the viewing. A Celebration of Russell’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Cavendish Village Cemetery. A time of Fellowship will follow in the church dining room.
Rev. Barry Davis and Rev. Abraham Gross will be officiating.
