Services for Charline Burkett, 94, of Los Angeles, California (formerly of Lufkin), will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Michael Hawthorne officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Ms. Burkett was born April 30, 1923 in Helmic (Trinity County), Texas, the daughter of the late Rosa Lee (Hutson) and Clifton Dominy. She passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in Los Angeles, California, having moved there in 2006.
Ms. Burkett was a retired teacher who taught for the Lufkin Independent School District for more than 37 years. She instilled a love of Texas history in her students, inspired many to enter the field of education and mentored many young teachers. After retirement, she worked at Livewell Athletic Club where she was the Director of Senior Activities and taught aerobics classes. Ms. Burkett was a true Southern Belle, who loved animals, enjoyed traveling, dancing and spending time with her family. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Lufkin and Grace Sunday School Class. She served multiple terms as President of both the Hometown Travelers Club and Beta Sigma Phi Service Sorority.
Survivors include her daughter, Renée Burkett of Calabasas, California; sister-in-law, Sandra Hutson Murphy of Nacogdoches; niece, Linda Bennett Rutherford of Orlando, Florida; nephews, Cliff Hutson and wife Chela of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Brex Hutson and wife Reta of Mexia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Burkett was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Blanche and Horace Bennett; and brother, Philip Hutson.
Pallbearers will be Cliff Hutson, Brex Hutson, Glenn Cummings, Robert Slack, James Morgan and Morty Halyard.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
