

Mr. McLean was born January 5, 1920 in Lumberton, to the late Abraham Lincoln and Mary Frances Parnell McLean.
He married Annie Mae Dowless on 25th of October 1941.
Mr. McLean was a Staff Sergeant (SSG) and served in the United States Army from 4th November 1941 to 13th October 1945 in the Company "G", 28th Division, 110th Infantry. He was in the first Army in the European Theatre of Operations.
Sgt. David McLean went missing in action in Luxembourg, Germany on December 20th 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. At the time he had served with his infantry in England, France, Belgium and Germany since going overseas in September of 1943. On January 14th his wife received the Purple Heart for wounds he had received unknown to her. He was liberated from the German prison camp Stalag 43 in April of 1945, where he had been a prisoner for 3 1/2 months.
Mr. McLean’s Awards and Medals of Honor included the Europe Theater Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, American Theater Operations Medal, Europe Theater Operations Medal, 4 Battle Stars.
Mr. McLean was preceded in death by wife, Annie Mae Dowless McLean; son, James Lincoln McLean; daughter, Bobbie Jean Pittman; one grandchild, Charlie B. Pittman; and siblings, Mary Maude Monroe, Henry Pope McLean, and Dorothy Grace Mercer.
Leaving to cherish his memories are sons, David Knox McLean, Jr. and wife, Mary Ellen, and Christopher McLean; daughters, Judy Parker and husband, William, Polly Floyd, Frances Powers and husband, Donald, Gwendolyn Vukovich and husband , Roger, and Lesia McLean-Kinlaw and husband, David Lynn; 23 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 at Biggs Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Singletary Baptist Church with Rev. Mitchell Nance officiating. He will be laid to rest in the McLean Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to The Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw 400 Flemington Drive Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, Singletary Baptist Church 4061 Singletary Church Road Lumberton, NC 28358, or a charity of one’s choice.
