

The funeral service will be held at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Leroy Burke and Rev. Charles Brust officiating on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. at a later date.
Mr. Prevatte was born June 10, 1924 in Robeson County to the late Jasper and Lottie Prevatte. He was a Robeson County farmer.
A member of America’s greatest generation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps May 24, 1941 at the age of 16 and served with the Fourth Marine Division. He saw action at Roi Namur, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was seriously wounded in the shoulder at Iwo Jima February 25, 1945. Sergeant Prevatte remained in the Corps until he was honorably discharged on November 18, 1945. Among the commendations he received were a Purple Heart, a Navy-Marine Corps Commendation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Navy Sea Service Medal, Navy Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Commendation.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a former spouse, Aleene Blount Prevatte; a son, Jasper (Junior) Prevatte; two sisters, Myrtle Davis and Eva Pait Britt; and two brothers, Harvey Prevatte and Jasper (June) Prevatte.
He is survived by three sons, Johnny, Joseph (Joe) and David Prevatte; five grandchildren, Matthew Prevatte and Christina Prevatte Snipes both of Lumberton, Josh Prevatte and Stacey Prevatte both of Georgia, and Christopher Prevatte; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Biggs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
