Obituary of Alvin and Betty Harvey
Jesse Alvin Harvey, 84, of Lynchburg passed away Monday, June 29, 2015 at Bently Commons. He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Betty Ferguson Harvey. Born in Lynchburg, May 6, 1931, he was the son of the late Walter Taylor Harvey and Arrah Ferguson Harvey. A native of Lynchburg, Alvin grew up in Fairview Heights where he had many fond memories and was a lifelong member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He was retired from A & P Grocery after 42 years of service where he was known as Harvey by his co-workers and customers. Alvin was also a US Navy veteran where he proudly served on the USS R. E. Kraus during the Korean conflict. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and among the things he enjoyed most in life was spending time with his family, especially his beloved granddaughter and also his many friends throughout the years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, J. Keith Harvey and Kenneth L. Harvey and his wife Caren all of Lynchburg and one granddaughter, Claire Harvey. Four brothers, Walter T. Harvey, Jr., Anthony E. Harvey, Zane G. Harvey and Morgan Harvey and three sisters, Alease H. Ragland, Marie H. Rudacille and Arrie H. Griffin preceded him in death. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Betty Ferguson Harvey, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 59 years, Jesse Alvin Harvey. Born in Appomattox County, December 16, 1932, she was the daughter of the late George Lewis Ferguson and Beulah Martin Ferguson. In her early years, Betty worked at Wiley & Wilson but enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was the caregiver for her mother for over 20 years. Betty was a longtime and active member of Fairview United Methodist Church where she enjoyed corresponding with those who were unable to attend on a regular basis. Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she cherished her family and friends and always put the needs of others before herself. She is survived by two sons, J. Keith Harvey and Kenneth L. Harvey and his wife Caren all of Lynchburg and one granddaughter, Claire Harvey. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A service celebrating the lives of Alvin and Betty will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015 at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Showers and the Rev. Robert Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and at other times at the residence of his son, Ken.
