

Ann Shaner Stratton, 68, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015, at Centra Health Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Thomas “Tommy” S. Stratton. Born April 8, 1946, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Elwyn H. Shaner and the late Cornelia Dowdy Shaner.
Ann was a retired banker for Sun Trust Bank and a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church. She was a native of and lifelong resident of Lynchburg and a 1964 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. Ann’s career in banking spanned four decades before retirement in 2012. Her warm, caring and charismatic personality drew people to her throughout her life and she was a loving, loyal and caring friend to many. Ann enjoyed the history of her native city and state, outdoor activities from hiking to gardening and needlework. Her fun and often mischievous personality was a delight to her family and friends. In the last year of her life, Ann waged a heroic battle against cancer. Her family would like to express their gratitude to the medical professionals, particularly her physician, Dr. Cecilia MacCallum and the caring and skilled staff at Lynchburg General Hospital –M ICU and Oncology ward. Her family is also grateful to all of her friends and neighbors who aided her during her illness with special appreciation to the tireless efforts of Darlene Carter, Rita Cothran, Beth Tyler and recently, Michelle Ramsey.
In addition to her husband and parents, Ann was preceded in death by her brother, Elwyn “Jerry” H. Shaner, Jr.
Ann is survived by numerous maternal cousins including, James “Jim” D. Burby, III of Bartow, FL; Marybeth Bodnaruk of Sorrento, FL and Margaret “Mitzi” Burby of Raymond, ME; and many paternal cousins.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m., Monday, April 6, 2015, at Fort Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth W. Ecklund and the Rev. Janet D. Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.., Monday, April 6, 2015, at the church.
