Annie Bell Newton Cofflin’s spirit broke its mortal bond to keep a divine appointment with Jesus Christ in Paradise on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Ann was 87 years old when she died at her home after a short illness. She was attended by her family during her illness and was visited often by friends and family during this time. Ann was born in Bedford County on November 10, 1938, daughter of the late Jesse W. Newton and the late Mabel M. Newton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Cecil Cofflin, whom she married on July 4, 1956, as well as a son, Timothy Cofflin, and a sister, Barbara Newton.
Ann attended Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Lynchburg Art Club, the Lynchburg Area Newcomers Club, was a volunteer at the Lynchburg Humane Society, as well as being an active member at the Jamerson YMCA. She enjoyed travel and visited many places in the United States and Europe with her dear friend, Shirley Morris. She was an avid painter and enjoyed painting floral still lifes and many of the places she visited in her travels. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening and flower gardening. Ann was an animal lover, voracious reader, and a “micro-activist” regularly donating to many causes that she believed in, such as the ASPCA, the DNC and Save the Children.
Ann cherished her family and her greatest joy was spending time with them. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Patricia Garrett and husband James Garrett, David Cofflin and wife Patricia Cofflin, Mark Cofflin and wife Rebecca Cofflin, and four siblings, Curtis Newton, Tom Newton, Audrey Fields and Wayne Newton. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 12:50 pm on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church where a celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Memorials in Ann’s memory may be made to the ASPCA or a local humane society.
