Charles Fredrick Burnette, Sr., 75, of Lynchburg passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born October 2, 1940, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late James Edward Burnette, Jr. and Virginia Evans Burnette.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Bonnie Albert Burnette; his son, Fred Burnette and wife Elizabeth of Sewickley, PA; one brother, Jim Burnette and wife Melinda of Richmond, VA; and three grandchildren, James, Selina and Alexander of Sewickley, PA.
Charlie served as a pilot for the Virginia State Police, and as a member and former elder of Rustburg Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the Virginia State Police Association and the Virginia State Police Alumni Association.
Charlie was chosen as one of the original four pilots for the Virginia State Police in 1970. In 1972, while flying in response to a call, Charlie’s helicopter went down. He survived the next 43 years in a wheelchair, raising his son and grandchildren, and having a full life with Bonnie and his family.
Charlie strived to do good for others. He served as a role model on how to accept adversity and how to persevere. Despite his unfortunate accident and subsequent paralysis, Charlie was never heard to complain. He was an especially good listener and offered sage advice. If he learned of someone in need, he would go out of his way to organize community support and help them. Charlie’s physical limitations did not impede his generosity.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Campbell County Historical Society or the Rustburg Presbyterian Church.
The Virginia State police will officiate a graveside service at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Cumbie Memorial Cemetery in Rustburg, VA.
The family expresses their appreciation for all of the support they’ve received, and for the services of Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502.
