

She was born October 18, 1930 in Appomattox, daughter of the late James D. Cawthorne and the late Annie Woodridge Cawthorne. Doris was the eighth of 18 children.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by, husbands Lewis Edward Staton and Loyd Don Johnson as well as 16 brothers and sisters.
In her early career she worked at several garment factories and afterwards worked for Marvin V Templeton and family until she retired.
To those she loved, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, family member, friend, and prayer warrior. Her generosity, strength and determination left a lasting impact on many lives. Her smile and witty sense of humor will be forever remembered. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her son James “Spike” Staton and wife Debbie; grandson, Steve Staton and wife Pam; son L.D. Johnson and wife Debbie; daughter Goldie “Gay” Archer; brother, Norman Cawthorne as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the Templeton family who did so much for her over the years and all their children and great grandchildren that referred to her as Grand Ma. Additionally, a special thanks to Wanda and Duke for meals they provided and the sense of security that allowed her to live alone as she wished.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, June 22, 2026 at Jordan Baptist Church where a celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Jordan Baptist Church, 3708 Parkwood Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501, where she was a charter member for 60 years.
